February 24, 2022: Tanks rolled into Ukraine. Bombs fell from the sky. The aggressor was Russia. Ksenia Bolchakova and Veronika Dorman, two French journalists of Russian origin, found themselves plunged into a new kind of abyss: “their” Russia had become an empire of evil. As Kremlin troops bogged down in Ukraine, they traveled across Russia for three weeks to paint a portrait of a society where the culture of violence is taught from early childhood. Wherever possible, state propaganda has succeeded in reversing notions of good and evil.
